Job Description

We are seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented and personable Graphic Designer to work with the Communications and Web / IT Teams at Transportation Alternatives on a series of exciting projects.  The Graphic Designer designs and / or oversees all projects or project phases that require graphic design work on both print and web platforms.  This includes the design of print collateral (postcards, reports, pamphlets, invitations, apparel, signs, posters, etc.), emails and websites.  The Graphic Designer also ensures consistent branding across all visual communications materials as per T.A.’s branding guidelines, and art directs the visual aspect of all T.A. communications.  This position is a hybrid role that requires skills in both management of assistants, consultants and freelancers and technical implementation of graphic / web design projects.  An ideal candidate for this position has a love of learning and the desire to grow into a leadership position with expanded responsibilities.  This position is integral to effectively communicating T.A.’s mission online and to exponentially growing the voice of our advocates to make New York City – its streets, buses and subways — a better place for every New Yorker.


●     Designing communications for both print and web

●     Upholding a standard of high caliber design for all of T.A.’s visual communication modes

●     Ensuring consistency of T.A. branding across communications vehicles

●     Management of design project or project phases across print and web platforms

●     Management of Design Assistant, design consultants/interns and printing/material vendors

●     Implementing technical aspects of design work for both print/web platforms

●     Annual planning for design projects

●     Working closely with Web Manager, Senior Director of IT, Online Production Associate and Communications/Marketing team on T.A. publications, marketing materials, e-communications and websites

●     Establish, implement and enforce design standards and best practices

●     Empower T.A. staff to create and update design templates themselves by building new tools, documenting procedures and providing support

●     Brainstorm and implement innovative solutions to improving the look and usability of our Convio-based web assets

●     Research new design solutions and apply them to problems

Qualifications and Required Experience:


  • ●     Above average/excellent skills in:
  • ○     Communicating T.A.’s message visually
  • ○     Graphic/ responsive web design
  • ○     Intermediate to advanced experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop specifically)
  • ○     Intermediate experience with CSS, HTML
  • ○     Drupal Theming
  • ●     Demonstrated ability to:
  • ○     Work in a fast-paced environment
  • ○     Adapt to changing project requirements
  • ○     Work in a collaborative team environment


  • Broad knowledge and experience in:
  • ○     Graphic design and web industry standards
  • ○     Information architecture, user experience and user interface/interaction design best practices
  • ○     Web development processes (planning/production/testing/roll-out)
  • ○     Responsive web design best practices and developing design mock-ups in HTML and CSS
  • ○     Print preparation/production processes
  • Experience in:
  • ○     Taking a creative concept and adapting in for a wide variety of communications vehicles (for both print/web)
  • ○     Art direction
  • ○     Hiring graphic design consultants
  • ○     Managing relationships with print vendors and consultants
  • ○     Project management
  • ○     Experience working for a not for profit preferred.  Experience working for an advocacy organization affiliated with transportation issues is highly desirable, but not required.

  • Experience with Trello or other collaboration/project management tools
  • Exposure to agile/Scrum methodologies
  • Experience with using Convio Luminate Online, Pantheon, git
  • Knowledge of JavaScript, PHP, jQuery

Compensation:We offer competitive salary and benefits including an employer contributed health/dental plan, a matching retirement plan, 3 weeks paid vacation, professional development opportunities, transit/bike commuter benefits and indoor bike parking. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and commensurate with experience.
