Job Description

OpenPlans is looking for an experienced Operations Manager who cares deeply about creating safe streets and effective transit, and using online media to further these goals.

The Operations Manager provides back-office services to our online news outlets, Streetsblog and Streetfilms. You’ll work closely with the directors of those teams. This position is part time, 2 days/week, with additional hours at month-end and during annual financial audit as necessary.

Responsibilities:

HR/Benefits

  • Interface with third-party payroll/benefits provider
  • Interface with third-party 401K provider
  • Annual benefits renewal lead
  • Post job announcements; screen resumes
  • Maintain personnel files
  • Address local, state and federal compliance issues as they arise

Finance

  • Expense processing
  • Accounts Payable
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Coordinate with bookkeeper on monthly reconciliation and reporting
  • Coordinate annual budget forecast
  • Coordinate w/bookkeeper and accountants on yearly audit and tax filing

General Operations

  • Coordinate board activities
  • Interface with lawyers
  • Interface with business insurance provider
  • Vendor database administration

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5 years of non-profit management and financial experience
  • Understanding of legal and financial items relevant to non-profit organizations
  • Understanding of best practice and legal standards related to human resources, accounting, organizational communications and other areas
  • Experience developing and managing multiple budgets
  • Strong working knowledge of benefits
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality with sensitive information
  • Strong computer skills, and the ability to pick up and learn new technologies on the fly. Comfort with advanced Excel functions
  • A positive outlook, and a natural inclination to ‘figure things out’ even when the requirements or time lines are unclear
  • Understanding of operational needs and challenges in an organization of our size
  • Experience in review and oversight of contracts
