Job Description
Position Overview
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud to be partnering with Sunday Streets again to provide volunteer coordination services by organizing infrastructural volunteers for Sunday Streets events in 2012. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s Sunday Streets Volunteer Program Interns will be working closely with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s Sunday Streets Volunteer Coordinator as well as the Membership & Volunteer Director.
This internship requires 10-20 hours/week non-Sunday Streets weeks, and up to 40 hours/week on event weeks, attendance at all Sunday Streets events is mandatory. A modest stipend will be provided as compensation.
Responsibilities of the Sunday Streets Volunteer Program interns includes:
- Assisting in the recruiting, scheduling, and placing infrastructural volunteers for Sunday Streets Events
- Leading volunteer trainings
- Assisting in the management of event-day volunteers at Sunday Streets events
- Supporting traffic management and emergency efforts with the SFMTA, DPW and SFPD
- Addressing the changing infrastructural volunteer needs for each event
- Applying San Francisco Bicycle Coalition protocols for volunteer handling, support and care services to meet event needs
- Conducting neighborhood outreach
- Leading volunteer canvassing teams
- Assisting in promotion of Sunday Streets volunteer opportunities to a wide and diverse audience
- Organizing and facilitating day-of volunteer check-in and distribution of volunteer supplies
This is an excellent opportunity for a “people person” who’s interested in building sustainable cities to gain hands-on experience from a successful City program and nonprofit partnership.
Skills & Knowledge to be Gained
- Experience planning and executing a successful open streets initiative
- Large-scale event logistics planning
- Traffic management and emergency coordination
- Recruiting, scheduling, placing and training volunteers for Sunday Streets Events
- Organizing and facilitating day-of volunteer check-in and distribution of volunteer supplies
- Conducting community outreach
- Data collection, evaluation and analysis
- Project management skills
- Working with City officials and decision-makers
- Inside experience with a highly effective nonprofit
Requirements
Essential:
- Past volunteer experience
- Interest in Volunteer organizing & mangement
- Track record of working well on team projects
- Excellent oral & written communications skills
- Strong multitasking ability required
- Cheerful, friendly, upbeat outlook
- Nonjudgemental, welcoming attitude
- Natural leadership qualities
- Demonstrate passion for creating a better city & be familiar with bicycle issues
- Able to ride a bicycle as transportation, haul a bicycle trailer, and lift at least 50lbs
Available to work some business hours Monday through Friday, from February through October
Helpful:
- Web/html experience
- Experience using Google applications
- Perky (yet professional) writing style
- Familiarity with Sunday Streets
- Commitment to building a sustainable San Francisco
- Experience with Macintosh computers
- Drivers’ License
